New Dharma Teacher

On April 9 2006 Jiun Hogen Roshi gave the Dharma Teacher ordination to Mary Anne Bliss Poor in Miami. Mary Anne's teacher name is Jigen, which means 'Merciful Eye'. Mary Anne started her Zen practice with our venerable master Prabhasa Dharma Roshi and continued her training after Roshi's passing away with Jiun Hogen Roshi.

Zen and Flamenco

We are very happy that Shoshi Israeli will come to Noorder Poort again to give a workshop Zen and Flamenco, together with Jiun Roshi, from August 27, 11.00 hour till August 29, 17.00 hour 2006

Why zen and flamenco?

In the zen tradition there are many 'ways'such as zen and the way of tea, zen and flower arrangement. These are ways to develop and apply aspects of the zen mind: one-pointedness, clear mind, complete surrender to this moment which implies forgetting ourselves, straightforward action without hesitation.

All these characteristics and much more come together in what we call positive samadhi in zen, a way of being that is difficult to describe with words. It touches that which in the flamenco culture is called duende.

The flamenco singer El Lebrijano said: "When I sing with duende, no one can equal me." An old master guitarist said: "Duende is not in the throat; duende surges up from the soles of the feet. Which means it is not a matter of ability, but of real live form; of blood; of ancient culture; of creative action." Zen and the way of flamenco, why not? It is serious practice and it is fun with Roshi and Shoshi!

Shoshi will teach flamenco dance, but also palmas and playing the cajon.

The meditation program includes sitting and walking meditation.

We will offer this program in such a way, that both beginners and experienced dancers and meditators will benefit from and enjoy this program, with the right balance between flamenco and zen practice.
