History
Since Prabhasa Dharma, Zenji started giving Zen retreats in Europe in 1982, the European sangha of IZI has steadily grown. At first Prabhasa Dharma, Zenji travelled from one -rented - center to another. Many students followed her all over Europe.

At the end of the eighties the need for a center for ourselves was very much felt. The first steps were taken to make this come true. Some locations in Germany were investigated, but in the end our eye fell upon a place in the Netherlands.

In 1995 we started preparations for buying a conference center in Wapserveen. On September 12, 1996 the deal was made. The International Zen Center Noorder Poort was a fact.

In the weekend of October 12 and 13, 1996 the center was officially opened. During the ceremony by Prabhasa Dharma, Zenji and Zen master Thich Man Giac, the Heart Sutra was recited in five languages. There were lots of festivities. The celebrations were completed by Zen master Thich Man Giac by releasing many pigeons, an old Buddhist ritual.

The Noorder Poort is controlled by the I.Z.C. Noorder Poort foundation. The board of directors consist of Jiun Hogen, Roshi and representatives of the Dutch and German sangha.
